Culpeper County
The region's hub. The town of Culpeper's brick downtown and Amtrak stop, with most of the county's growth running along the Route 29 corridor.
Fauquier County
Warrenton and horse-farm country on the region's northern edge. The closest county to Northern Virginia, with the region's priciest housing and large conservation easements keeping much of it rural.
Rappahannock County
A deliberately rural county bordering Shenandoah National Park: Sperryville, the village of Washington, and the Inn at Little Washington, with about 7,300 residents.
Madison County
The Blue Ridge foothills south of Sperryville. The town of Madison, the Old Rag trailhead at Nethers, and Graves Mountain farm country.
Orange County
James Madison's Montpelier and the towns of Orange and Gordonsville, with the Lake of the Woods community drawing Fredericksburg-corridor commuters on the county's eastern end.
